Project Description

San Francisco International AirportÌýis one of the busiest airports in theÌýUnited States. The number of PacificÌýRim travelers using SFO was projectedÌýto increase. In order to keep paceÌýwith the demand, SFIA underwent aÌýmassive expansion. The centerpiece ofÌýthe construction program was the International Terminal.

The 1,800,000-square-foot, five-level steel structure International TerminalÌýprovides a world-class welcome to an expected 12 million passengers each year. SomeÌýof the features include 24 international gates, customs ability to handle 5,000 passengersÌýper hour, 12 baggage carousels, 32 elevators, 26 escalators, 168 high-techÌýcheck-in counters, 382,000 square feet of metal and glass, 18 acres of terrazzo andÌýcarpet, 147,000 square feet of retail space for world-class restaurants and retail stores, as well as security systems.

The International Terminal straddles the existing roadwork concurrentlyÌýexpanded toÌýeight lanes. Maintaining access to the existing terminals was of critical importanceÌýduring the construction. The key to the success of the project was protecting theÌýsafety of the public, airport and airline personnel, and construction personnel.

Parking facilities provide for 3,200 parking spaces adjacent to theÌýInternational Terminal. TutorÌýPerini was the contractor for the $60 million, nine-levelÌýconcrete parking garage with post-tensioned beams and deck slabs, architectural precastÌýconcrete, and prefabricated metal/composite panels. The garage connects to theÌýInternational Terminal via a steel truss pedestrian bridge and an integral ART StationÌýincorporated into the garage.
