Project Description

During the height of U.S. military operations in Iraq, the government determined that there was an urgent need to protect high-density gathering places, such as dining facilities and gymnasiums, and put out an RFP under a USACE IDIQ contract. Perini Management Services took on the challenge to design and construct these first-of-a-kind anti-ballistic structures to protect U.S. military personnel at multiple bases and forward operating locations in Iraq. Working closely with the USACE Engineering, Research and Development Center and the Protective Design Center, Perini put the concept into full design and ultimately constructed 111 structures at 24 different military and Department of State locations over a five-year period. The Overhead Coverage Systems worked as designed, deflecting indirect fire with a double-layer roof system that was supported by pre-engineered steel structural elements.
